The PrioratQualified Denominació d'Origen(DOQ) is the only region in Catalonia to have been awarded such a status. It covers a small area of less than 20,000 hectares, of which only 1,600 given over to wine production. The terrain is very rugged, “cataclismatic” in the words of the Catalan poet Josep Pla. This makes the cultivation of the vineyard complicated, demanding and rather costly. The region’s soil is characteristically made up of slate. Red wines predominate, representing some 90% of the production, and are strong and bright, with a lingering taste.
