C.O. TARRAGONA

TARRAGONA, APPROVED WINES FROM ORIGIN

It is said that the vineyard was already cultivated in Tarragona when the Greek colonies settled further north of the Catalan coast, but the Roman Empire was the true enhancer of the wines of Tarragona, both for its marketing work and for being the initiators of the denomination “Tarragona”. These wines were appreciated in all the Empire.

Currently, the production area of the D.O Tarragona is spread over 73 municipal areas located mainly in the regions of Camp de Tarragona and part of the Ribera de Ebro; and it continues being the second producing region of Catalonia.

The typical wines are the sweet and the liqueur ones: mistela, muscatel, garnacha, stale wine and white wine. We should also highlight the sacramental wine and the Tarragona Classic one. The grape production stands out for white grapes with the varieties of macabeo, parellada and xarel·lo, largely destined to the production of cava.

The dry and quiet wines are diverse, with a predominance of moderate-graded whites and fruity aromas. The red wines are tempranillo, garnacha, merlot and cabernet sauvignon. For some years, the Regulatory Council has been working to recover the wine identity of the DO Tarragona through reviving forgotten varieties such as the sumoll.
